Description

Cardiac biomarkers are substances released into the bloodstream when heart muscle tissue is damaged or subjected to stress during myocardial infarction (MI). Measurement of these biomarkers is crucial for the diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome (ACS), cardiac ischemia and other conditions associated with reduced blood flow to the heart. Cardiac biomarkers play a vital role in diagnosis, risk stratification, guiding clinical management and decision-making in patients presenting with signs and symptoms suggestive of MI.

Commonly used cardiac markers include cardiac troponin I, creatine kinase-MB (CK-MB) and myoglobin, which aid in the diagnosis, evaluation and monitoring of patients suspected of having ACS. In addition, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) testing may be used to assess cardiovascular risk and overall cardiac status.
