Description

Anemia is defined as a decreased concentration of hemoglobin in the blood, resulting either from a reduced number of red blood cells (RBCs) or a decreased hemoglobin content within the RBCs. A variety of laboratory investigations are used to diagnose anemia and determine its underlying cause. Iron deficiency anemia is characterized by low serum ferritin levels and an increased total iron-binding capacity. Among iron status indicators, serum ferritin is considered the most reliable biomarker for assessing body iron stores.

The formation of RBCs requires vitamin B12 and its deficiency can result in chronic anemia. Vitamin B12 deficiency leads to megaloblastic anemia and may also cause neurological complications if left untreated.
