Description

Ferritin is a major soluble iron-storage protein. Ferritin is frequently found in body fluids and systemic organs such as the liver and spleen. Together with transferrin, ferritin binds and releases iron to maintain the level of iron storage in the body. Ferritin directly reflects the amount of iron stored in the body and it is useful for diagnosis and therapeutic assessment of iron-deficiency anemia and hyperferremia. Also, irrespective of the level of stored iron, the level of ferritin can be abnormally high in malignancies.
