Description
E2 is one of the female steroid hormone (estrogens) which is mostly produced by the ovary. In the first half (follicular phase) of the menstrual cycle, FSH largely facilitates follicular development. As follicles develop, E2 secretion increases, and when the level of E2 exceeds a threshold level, a large amount of LH is secreted by the pituitary as a result of positive feedback (LH surge) to induce ovulation. By measuring the level of E2 together with those of LH and FSH, it is possible to assess the function of the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal axis. In addition, E2 assay is used as an auxiliary test for monitoring follicular development in fertility treatment.
