Description

Osteocalcin, also known as bone Gla protein (BGP), is one of major non-collagenous bone proteins. It is a small protein of 49 amino acids produced by osteoblasts and mostly contains three γ-carboxylated glutamic acid (Gla) residues at positions 17, 21 and 24, which resulted from the modification by vitamin K dependent carboxylase. The Gla residues are known to be important for the Ca2+-binding ability of osteocalcin. Osteocalcin is mostly deposited in the extracellular bone matrix, while it is partly released into the blood. The level of blood osteocalcin is sensitive to osteoblastic activity and reflects the rate of bone formation. Thus, osteocalcin is a useful biomarker for researching metabolic bone disease states.
