Description

Thyroglobulin (Tg) is a thyroid-specific, two-subunit glycoprotein which has a molecular weight of about 660 kDa. Tg is a main component of the colloid in the thyroid follicle cell and plays an important role in the synthesis, storage and secretion of thyroid hormone within thyroid tissue. Among the diseases which show a high blood concentration of Tg, there are thyroid gland tumor, Graves’ disease, sub acute thyroiditis, Hashimoto’s disease and thyroid cancer, etc. In the case of thyroid differentiated cancers, such as papillary adenocarcinoma of thyroid, the Tg concentration in blood tends to decrease to an extremely low level after the extraction of the thyroid tissue. And the concentration tends to increase when a recurrence and metastasis are observed. For these reasons, the measurement of Tg is considered to be useful for a postoperative observation and a diagnosis of postoperative recurrence or metastasis. It is also considered to be useful for the observation of the curative effect of Graves’ disease, the index of remission and the determination of congenital hypothyroidism.
