Renal Markers

Renal and kidney dysfunction results from the gradual loss of the kidneys’ ability to filter waste, maintain electrolyte balance and regulate essential hormones. Several biomarkers help assess the extent and nature of this impairment. Cystatin C is a sensitive marker of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and often detects reduced kidney function earlier than creatinine. Intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) reflects disturbances in mineral metabolism that occur in chronic kidney disease, particularly abnormalities in calcium and phosphate balance leading to secondary hyperparathyroidism. β2-microglobulin (BMG) serves as an indicator of tubular function, rising when the renal tubules are damaged or when filtration is impaired.
